Radiation Oncology
The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center will deliver truly advanced radiation therapy services with these technological innovations:
- The Varian 21Ex Linear Accelerator, which provides image-guided radiation therapy that optimizes accuracy and enables clinicians to potentially improve outcomes for patients.
- The Varian Eclipse treatment planning and virtual simulation software, which is designed to significantly speed up treatment planning by automating many time-consuming functions.
- GE CT/SIM, which provides high-quality three-dimensional imaging of the patient in treatment position.
- The Varian Acuity Simulator, which offers filmless verification and documentation of patient set-up before the first treatment.
- High Dose Rate Brachytherapy, which is primarily used for treating breast, prostate and gynecological cancers and often results in fewer side effects and shorter recovery times. New, more precise targeting methods enable clinicians to use brachytherapy to treat areas that just a few years ago would have been considered too risky, such as within the lung or in the head and neck.
- Respiratory Gating, a new technique in radiation therapy that allows the therapist to more accurately treat targets that move with patient breathing. By selectively treating the target, we can also minimize the volume of healthy tissues that are irradiated.
- On-board Imager, a powerful tool integrated with the accelerator that allows more precise cancer treatment by giving the radiation oncologist the ability to target and track tumors more accurately.
