Treating Children with Cancer

Pediatric oncology patients at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center are treated by professionals who understand the special needs of children with cancer. A certified pediatric oncology nurse coordinates care for more than 40 patients from birth into their early 20s. Along with administering chemotherapy, the pediatric oncology nurse coordinates their follow-up appointments and schedules CT scans, MRIs and other appointments, providing crucial continuity of care.

Pediatric hematologist/oncologist Drew Pendleton, MD, is the director of the program, which is affiliated with the Children's Oncology Group. This affiliation enables him to offer patients the same treatment protocols that are prescribed nationwide. An additional pediatric nurse and a clinical research associate complete the staff.

The pediatric oncology program is housed on the second floor and features its own waiting area, a treatment room, a recovery room, five exam rooms and separate treatment areas for children and adolescents. The library that was created at Cabell Huntington Hospital for pediatric oncology patients is now at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center and is being expanded to include computers and computer games, along with a DVD library. The library offers much-needed distraction for the children and their family members during treatment and recovery.
