Hazel Beer

Hazel Beer, of Huntington, recently celebrated her 89th birthday. But that's not all she's celebrating these days.

Last year, Hazel was diagnosed with colon cancer, which was successfully removed by Dr. Wade Douglas, a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

"Hazel is one of the fortunate patients to identify colon cancer early through screening colonoscopy and to be treated by surgery alone," said Dr. Douglas. "And today, she's celebrating her one-year anniversary of being cancer-free."

"I feel very lucky, because my father died of colon cancer at age 60," said Hazel. "He let his go too far."

And now, in addition to celebrating, Hazel spends much of her time encouraging her friends to get examined.
