The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Diagnostic Breast Center and the Cabell Huntington Hospital Breast Health Center have each been granted a three-year designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. “We hope that women understand the importance of NAPBC accreditation and seek out facilities that have achieved this status,” Maria Tria Tirona, MD, Chair of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Care Leadership Program. “We are one of only four such programs in West Virginia, and we are committed to providing the highest quality breast care to the patients we serve. As demonstrated by our accreditation, our program is led by group of multidisciplinary physicians and supported by a team of nurses and supportive care personnel that understand the unique needs of women with breast diseases.”
The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Diagnostic Breast Center has two full-time breast surgeons and a team of experienced nursing staff and breast health navigators to guide patients through each step of their diagnosis and treatment.
During the survey process, the centers must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with any of the full spectrum of breast diseases. The standards include proficiency in the areas of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.
