The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer has granted the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center a three-year approval with commendation, the commission?s highest level of approval.

In a recent on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center was found to be in compliance with the standards set forth by the commission, including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

In addition to setting standards for cancer care, the Commission on Cancer also collects data from approved facilities and use that data to develop effective educational interventions to improve cancer care outcomes at the national, state and local level.

Patients who are treated at CoC-approved programs have access to comprehensive care that includes a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; access to cancer-related information, education and support; a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results; and quality care close to home.

The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center was established through a strong partnership between Cabell Huntington Hospital and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. This partnership offers patients access to experienced and respected physicians, radiologists and surgeons, a skilled and caring nursing staff and the most current protocols for cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. In the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, patients have access to a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, PET/CT, clinical trials and support services.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations that includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 40 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
