CHH Receives Community Investment Grant from American Cancer Society

The South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society recently awarded the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center a Targeted Community Investment Grant.

The $6,500 grant is to be used to develop and coordinate a Community Cancer Control Council through which, the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center will partner with the American Cancer Society, the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition and other healthcare organizations. The purpose of the council will be to assess the availability of screenings and services and identify gaps in those services.

"We want to have a better idea of what screenings are available to the community, so we can determine what screenings need to be added," said Lynn Jarrell, clinical director of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. "We also want to identify people who would benefit from the available screenings and help make it possible for them to take advantage of them."

One of the goals of the Edwards Center staff is to establish an ambassador program that will help identify people who would benefit from free screenings and low-cost services available in the community but who are not aware of them.

"An ambassador could be a pastor's wife who knows a woman in her church whose insurance doesn't cover a yearly pap smear, and she can help that woman take advantage of the free or reduced cost of services available through the Breast and Cervical Cancer program," Jarrell said.

"We are grateful to the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society for awarding us this grant," Jarrell said. "We will use the money to help us in our effort to make early detection possible for more people in our community."
